Synthesis of multifunctional metallic materials by electrochemical methods (Autonomous University of Barcelona) Dr. Eva Pellicer (RYC-2012-10839)

Dr. Eva Pellicer was one of the five winners in the last edition of Spanish L’Oréal-UNESCO ‘For Women in Science’ (November 2014) and has been recently awarded the L’Oréal-UNESCO ‘International Rising Talents’ (May 2015). This prize distinguishes 15 promising young women researchers from among the winners of the 236 fellowships awarded locally by the program around the world.

Eva Pellicer is a ‘Ramon y Cajal’ researcher at Gnm3 group of the Physics Department at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona since December 2013. She got the PhD in Chemistry in 2005 from Universitat de Barcelona (UB). Before joining the UAB as a ‘Beatriu de Pinós’ fellow, she was a postdoctoral researcher at the Electronics Department, UB (2005-2006) and at the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (2007-2008). She has performed postdoctoral research stays at Bioforsk (Norway) and ETH-Zürich. Dr. Pellicer has authored or co-authored over 100 articles, which have received more than 1400 (h=22) citations, and has given more than 30 invited/plenary talks both at national and international meetings (e.g. 3DMR 2011, ISMANAM 2012, Thermec 2013, ISMANAM 2013 and 26th Deutsche Zeolith-Tagung). She has received several prizes throughout her career like the Westinghouse Prize in 2005 from the Institute of Metal Finishing (UK) and the “Science As Art” from MRS Spring Meeting in 2014.

Her current research interests include the synthesis of multifunctional metallic films (Adv. Funct. Mater. 20 (2010) 983), foams and micro/nanostructures by electrochemical methods (Small 10 (2014) 1284; J. Mater. Chem. C 1 (2013) 7215) and ordered mesoporous metal oxides (with pore sizes between 2 nm and 40 nm) and nanocomposites by wet chemistry procedures (Adv. Funct. Mater. 23 (2013) 900; Nanoscale 5 (2013) 5561). She is focussed on the characterization of the magnetic, mechanical and electrocatalytic properties of these materials. Thanks to the ‘Ramón y Cajal’ contract she got in 2013, Dr. Pellicer has the opportunity to deepen the knowledge in the synthetic aspects of nanoporous materials and the exploitation of their properties in diverse fields like robotics and energy (Nanoscale 6 (2014) 12490). The L’Oréal-Unesco funds will be used to develop a project which encompasses the synthesis of metallic nanoporous foams free from noble metals to be used as electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction.

Dr. Pellicer has participated in over 18 national and international projects. She currently coordinates the European Tempus project entitled “Development of Sustainable Interrelations between Education, Research and Innovation at WBC Universities in Nanotechnologies and Advanced Materials where Innovation Means Business” and is the Training Manager of ITN SELECTA (“Smart Electrodeposited Alloys for environmentally sustainable applications: from advanced protective coatings to micro/nano-robotic platforms”) project from Horizon 2020 program. She has participated in the organization of several round tables and symposiums in international conferences and has been co-guest editor of special issues for Materials (MDPI) and Nanomaterials (MDPI) journals.

She combines research and teaching duties in the Nanoscience and Nanotechnology degree at UAB and coordinates two modules of the Advanced Master in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. She has co-supervised 2 doctoral theses and is currently co-supervising the work of 4 PhD students.
