Finalizó sus estudios en Ciencias de la Actividad Física y del Deporte n 2005 por la Universidad de Granada obteniendo el premio extraordinario de Licenciatura por parte del Ministerio Español de Educación, Cultura y Deporte y vinculándose con el ámbito investigador gracias al grupo de investigación EFFECTS-262 de la dicha Universidad.

Seguidamente ha ido desarrollando las diferentes fases consideradas por el Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación como parte de la carrera investigadora para convertirse en investigador independiente estando su línea de investigación basada en la epidemiología de la promoción de salud y prevención de enfermedades cardio-metabólicas mediante la actividad física y el ejercicio. En primer lugar, consiguió la altamente competitiva beca nacional de Formación de Profesorado Universitario (FPU, MEC) en la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid y durante los siguientes 4 años desarrolló y culminó el Máster en Nutrición Humana con mención europea y defendió su tesis doctoral en el Departamento de Fisiología (Facultad de Medicina, Universidad de Granada) que obtuvo el premio extraordinario de tesis doctoral de la Escuela de doctorado de dicha Universidad. Su tesis estuvo basada en el contexto de un proyecto europeo (FP6; HELENA Project). Realizó diversas estancias de investigación en la universidad de Glasgow (Reino Unido) y el Instituto Karolinska (Suecia), así como visitas cortas de investigación a centros como el MRC Unidad de Epidemiologia de la Universidad de Cambridge o el UCL de Londres (Reino Unido), la escuela de Salud Pública de la Universidad de Carolina del Sur (EEUU) y la Universidad John Moores de Liverpool (Reino Unido).

En 2011, inicio el contrato postdoctoral “Juan de la Cierva (años) en el prestigioso grupo de investigación a nivel internacional GENUD. Su estancia postdoctoral le permitió trabajar activamente como investigador en el desarrollo de diversos proyectos europeos (FP6 y FP7) así como colaborar en proyectos de carácter internacional con Estados Unidos e iniciarse como IP de un proyecto regional.

En la convocatoria 2014, consigue el prestigioso contrato del Programa Ramón y Cajal en el área de Medicina Clínica y Epidemiologia que desarrolla desde 2016 en la Universidad de Cádiz, donde es el responsable del grupo de investigación MOVE-IT CTS1038. Actualmente, es IP de varios proyectos de carácter nacional y Autonómico (RETOS I+D+I; Fondos ITI-FEDER) y sus intereses de investigación se centran en “Potenciar la salud a través de la actividad física, el ejercicio y la nutrición” con proyectos específicos centrados en la prevención y tratamiento de la obesidad, el Alzheimer y el Envejecimiento Activo. Además, es miembro de diferentes comités científicos de expertos sobre actividad física y salud y participa como revisor/evaluador en varias revistas científicas de impacto y como evaluador de agencias públicas nacionales e internacionales como la Agencia Nacional de Evaluación y Prospectiva (ANEP) o  “European Commission  – EACEA”.

He got his bachelor degree in Sport Sciences and Physical Activity in 2005 at the University of Granada getting the extraordinary final bachelor award of the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport (MEC).

Thenceforth, the candidate has been getting the different steps that the Ministry of Science and Innovation considers appropriate to become an independent researcher being the main research line based in the epidemiology of promoting health and preventing cardiometabolic diseases through physical activity and exercise. First, he got the highly competitive national grant (grant FPU, MEC) at Polytechnic University of Madrid and during this four-year period he defended the Master in Human Nutrition with European Mention and also defended his European thesis in the Department of Physiology (Faculty of Medicine, Granada) being awarded with the extraordinary prize of doctoral thesis by the School of Doctorate of Sciences of the Health. His thesis was based in the context of a European funded Project (FP6). He also did several stays at Glasgow University (UK) and Karolinska Institutet (Sweden); as well as short visits to the MRC Epidemiology Unit at University of Cambridge and the University College London (UK), Arnold School of Public Health at University of South Carolina (US) and the Liverpool John Moores University (UK).

In 2011, he started his postdoctoral research period as “Juan de la Cierva” at university of Zaragoza. This allow him to work as an active researcher in several EU funded projects (FP6 and FP7) and to collaborate in another international project from United States and also being PI in a regional project.

In 2014, he was awarded a “Ramon y Cajal” (RyC) tenure track grant at University of Cádiz (UCA) were he is currently IP of a National project (RETOS; I+D+I) and his research interests focus on “Empowering the health through physical activity, exercise and nutrition” with specific projects being centered on the prevention and treatment of obesity and Alzheimer.

He is member of different Scientific Expert Committees on physical activity and health and acts as referee in several well-known research journals and evaluating agencies such as the National Evaluation and Foresight Agency (ANEP).

She obtained her Physics degree in Valencia University with Special Award recognition. Her PhD thesis (2006), performed at Instituto de Física Corpuscular (IFIC) with a predoctoral FPU fellowship, got the Special Award from University of Valencia, as well as the accreditation of European Doctorate. From 2006 to 2008 Dr. Tórtola worked as postdoctoral researcher at Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisbon) with a Marie Curie contract. In 2008, she joined Hamburg University with a German-funded contract until December of 2009, when she returned to IFIC, within the JAE-Doc CSIC Program. Since January 2015 she works as Ramón y Cajal Researcher at IFIC.

Mariam Tórtola’s main activity has been on phenomenological aspects of neutrino physics, where she produced oscillation data analyses with a major impact world-wide. She has also investigated non-standard interactions and neutrino magnetic moments within various particle physics models. She has also worked on neutrino theory topics such as models for neutrino masses and their cosmological implications in leptogenesis and dark matter.

She has published more than 50 articles in high-impact peer-reviewed journals, with more than 5000 citations. Four of them, with more than 500 citations each, constitute standard references in the neutrino community. She is also a member of the experimental collaboration DUNE, aiming to build the most sophisticated neutrino experiment to date. Dr. Tórtola’s has been recognized with the RSEF/BBVA prize for Young Researchers in 2009 and the L’Oréal-UNESCO Award For Women in Science  in 2017. She has participated in many national and international projects and collaborates very actively with researchers from several European and international institutions.

She has presented results many international conferences and has contributed to the organization of four of them. She has also been invited to give specialized seminars and PhD lessons at several universities and research institutes. She belongs to the Editorial Board of two international scientific journals and acts as regular referee for the top journals in her field. Dr. Tórtola has supervised 2 (finished) and 1 (ongoing) PhD. Since 2015 she collaborates in the teaching duties of the Theoretical Physics Department of University of Valencia and she has supervised several bachelor and master thesis. She is also actively involved in the outreach activities of IFIC.

Es Licenciada en Física por la Universidad de Valencia con Premio Extraordinario. Su tesis doctoral (2006), realizada en el Instituto de Física Corpuscular (IFIC) con una beca predoctoral FPU, obtuvo el Premio Extraordinario de la Universidad de Valencia y la mención de Doctorado Europeo. De 2006 a 2008 trabajó como investigadora postdoctoral en el Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisboa) con un contrato Marie Curie. En 2008, se incorporó a la Universidad de Hamburgo con un contrato financiado por Alemania hasta diciembre de 2009, cuando volvió al IFIC, dentro del Programa JAE-Doc CSIC. Desde enero de 2015 trabaja como investigadora Ramón y Cajal en el IFIC.

Su actividad investigadora se ha centrado en los aspectos fenomenológicos de la física de neutrinos, con análisis de los datos de oscilación que han tenido un gran impacto en todo el mundo. También ha investigado interacciones no estándar y momentos magnéticos del neutrino dentro de varios modelos de física de partículas. Ha estudiado también modelos de masas de neutrinos y sus implicaciones cosmológicas (leptogénesis, materia oscura,…).

Ha publicado más de 50 artículos en revistas de alto impacto revisadas por pares, con más de 5000 citas. Cuatro de ellos, con más de 500 citas cada uno, constituyen referencias estándar en la comunidad de neutrinos. También es miembro de la colaboración experimental DUNE, que planea construir el experimento de neutrinos más sofisticado hasta la fecha. Su trabajo ha sido reconocido con el Premio RSEF / BBVA para Jóvenes Investigadores en 2009  y el Premio L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science  en 2017 . Ha participado en numerosos proyectos nacionales e internacionales y colabora muy activamente con investigadores de diversos instituciones europeas e internacionales.

Ha presentado resultados en numerosas conferencias internacionales y ha contribuido a la organización de cuatro de ellas. También ha sido invitada a dar seminarios especializados y cursos de doctorado en varias universidades e institutos de investigación. Pertenece al Consejo Editorial de dos revistas científicas internacionales y actúa como referee habitual de las principales revistas de su área. Ha supervisado 2 tesis doctorales más otra en curso. Desde el año 2015 colabora en la docencia del Departamento de Física Teórica de la Universidad de Valencia y ha dirigido varios trabajos de grado y master. Además, participa activamente en las actividades de divulgación del IFIC.

Finalizó su Licenciatura (2002) y Doctorado (2007) en Química en la Universidad de Cádiz donde estudió la aplicación de microscopías avanzadas electrónicas de transmisión para el estudio de nanomateriales relacionados en catálisis, obteniendo el premio extraordinario de doctorado (2008). Su etapa Post-doctoral transcurre en el Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy de la University of Cambridge (Reino Unido) en el seno del grupo de investigación dirigido por el Prof FRS Paul A. Midgley.

En 2010 regresa a España con un contrato “Juan de la Cierva”, con el objetivo de implementar nuevas técnicas de microscopía electrónica de transmisión, principalmente tomografía electrónica, en la Universidad de Cádiz. Desde 2014 es investigador “Ramón y Cajal” en la misma Universidad de Cádiz. Ha publicado hasta el momento más de 60 artículos con un número de citas por encima de 1000 y es reconocido internacionalmente por su contribución en el desarrollo y aplicación de tomografía electrónica en la caracterización tridimensional (3D) de catalizadores heterogéneos.

Ha participado en sendos proyectos competitivos de I+D+i, nacionales como internacionales, destacando aquellos proyectos internacionales concedidos bajo los 6º y 7º Programa Marco de la Unión Europea. Es Consultor Externo para varias empresas de los campos de la Química y la Catálisis, participando activamente en diversas acciones de transferencia donde ha dirigido contratos y/o proyectos con empresas del exterior. Es co-autor de 4 Patentes.

Es uno de los promotores involucrados en la fundación de la Escuela de Microscopía Electrónica de Transmisión TEM-UCA. Desde 2009, esta escuela se integra dentro de los cursos de formación continua y de doctorado de la Universidad de Cádiz. TEM-UCA es un referente internacional como programa avanzado de formación y entrenamiento en microscopía electrónica de nanomateriales. Además, miembro en varios comités editoriales y sociedades científicas como la Sociedad Europea de Microscopía, la Sociedad Española de Materiales o la Sociedad de Microscopía de España, además de participar como evaluador en diversas agencias y programas nacionales e internacionales.

He completed Undergraduate (2002) and Postgraduate Chemistry degrees (2007) at University of Cádiz where he studied the application of advanced transmission electron microscopy of catalysis-related nanomaterials, and awarded with the Outstanding PhD Thesis Award (2008).

He carried out Post-Doctoral Research at the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy in the University of Cambridge (UK) with Prof FRS Paul A. Midgley. On returning to Spain (2010), he got a “Juan de la Cierva” Senior Researcher position impelling the incorporation of new electron microscopy techniques, mainly electron tomography, in the Electron Microscopy Services at the University of Cádiz.

Since 2014, he is “Ramón y Cajal” – Senior Researcher in the University of Cádiz.

He has published more than 60 research articles that have been cited over 1000 times and is internationally recognized for his contribution in the development and application of electron tomography for the 3D characterization of heterogeneous catalysts.

He has participated in several R&D&I competitive research projects, funded by both national and international agencies, from which highlights those funded under the 6^th and 7^th Framework Programme of the European Union.

He is External Consultant for companies within Chemical and Catalysis fields, participating in related transference activities leading to several projects with international companies.

Dr Hernández-Garrido is one of the promoters involved on the foundation of the transmission electron microscopy workshop TEM-UCA. From the 2009 edition, is being offered within the Continuous Teaching Programme of the University of Cádiz with the candidate as Coordinator for the academic and logistic area. This TEMUCA workshop is, nowadays, an international reference as advanced training programme on electron microscopy of nanomaterials.

He is member of several academic editorial boards and scientific societies, European Microscopy Society (EMS), Spanish Materials Society and Spanish Microscopy Society as well as evaluator for national and international scientific and academic agencies.
